The Coupon Insider: Magic of double and triple coupons

Money magic

Couponers know there’s more saving to be found in coupons than just face value. What’s the trick? Many grocers offer double coupons every day. So, just like magic, a 50-cents off coupon *poof* turns into $1 off. Most participating retailers limit the doubling of manufacturer’s coupons to a maximum savings of $1, which means coupons up to (and including) 50-cents off are eligible.

Coupons valued below 50 cents are doubled at face value. (For example, 30-cents off becomes 60-cents off.) Coupons above 50 cents (and up to 99-cents) are not doubled, but rather extended to reach the $1 maximum limit. (For example, a 55-cents-off coupon will be given an additional 45-cents off for a final savings of $1.) If you’re unsure whether your grocer participates, inquire at the customer service counter.

In a truly “magical time” for coupon clippers, some retailers offer triple coupons. The savings are typically “for a limited time” and not offered on a regular basis. In this case, the maximum savings remains $1. However, coupons up to 33 cents off are eligible. (For example, a 25-cents-off coupon becomes 75-cents off.) The trick here is to check the weekly circulars to know when it’s available. It’s a rare feat to find triple coupons nowadays, so don’t stress too much about finding it. You can work savings magic just fine with double coupons.

The Ultimate Guide to Coupons

As with any savings, double coupons can be a bit tricky. It’s all in the fine print. Not all coupons are eligible for the promotion. For the most part, digital, store-branded and in-store coupons are not eligible. (By “in-store,” we mean coupons you find on shelves or packages.) Our best advice is to just read the coupon — many will clearly state, “Not Subject To Doubling.”
